Same-day NAV in Mutual Funds: How to get it?
Maximize your returns by understanding how same-day NAV works in mutual funds, and how to optimize your entry and exit points with the right timing and payment methods.

Mutual funds have become a key part of retail investing in India. They provide an easy way to access a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, and other investments. One important concept that investors should consider is Net Asset Value (NAV). Understanding how to get the same-day NAV on purchase or redemption is crucial for maximizing returns and optimizing entry and exit points.
In this blog, we’ll look at how you can get same-day NAV in a mutual fund and how SEBI’s rules and fund cut-off times operate.
What is NAV in Mutual Funds?
NAV, or Net Asset Value, is the per-unit value of a mutual fund scheme. It is calculated as:
NAV = (Total assets – Total Liabilities) / Total outstanding units
NAV reflects the market value of all the securities in the fund portfolio. Since it is updated once daily after market hours, the NAV an investor gets depends on the time they place their transaction request and the rules governing it.
SEBI revised NAV rules to bring more uniformity across fund categories. You need to pay attention to it to know how to get same day NAV in mutual fund.
As per the guidelines:
- For all mutual fund purchases (except liquid and overnight funds), the NAV is allotted based on when the money reaches the fund house, not just the time of application.
- For redemptions, NAV depends strictly on cut-off timings, which vary across fund categories.
This means that even if an investor places an order before the cut-off time, but their payment is not realized in the fund’s bank account before the deadline, then the investor may not get the same-day NAV.
Cut-off timings for mutual fund purchases
Here are the cut-off timings for different mutual fund categories in India:
Equity and Debt Funds (Except Liquid & Overnight Funds)
- Cut-off time: 3:00 PM
- If the funds are available with the AMC before 3:00 PM, then the investors get the same day’s NAV.
- If funds are received after 3:00 PM, then they get the next business day’s NAV.
Liquid Funds & Overnight Funds
- Cut-off time: 1:30 PM
- If an investor invests before 1:30 PM with clear funds, they get the same day NAV.
- Investments after 1:30 PM are allotted the next business day’s NAV.
This earlier cut-off exists because liquid and overnight funds settle faster and are widely used for treasury management and parking short-term surplus.
International Funds & Fund of Funds (FoFs)
- Cut-off time: Typically 3:00 PM (but may differ based on scheme).
- NAV allotment depends not only on Indian cut-offs but also on overseas fund processing timelines.
Cut-off timings for redemptions
Just like purchases, redemption requests also follow strict cut-off timings:
General redemption cut-off time
For equity, debt, and hybrid mutual funds, the cut-off time for redemption is uniformly set at 3:00 PM IST on a business day.
- Redemption requests received on or before 3:00 PM are processed at that day’s NAV (T-day NAV).
- Requests placed after 3:00 PM receive the NAV of the next business day (T+1 day NAV).
Redemption cut-off timings for Liquid and Overnight Funds
SEBI revised the redemption cut-off times for liquid and overnight mutual fund schemes in June 2025. The new regulations extended the redemption cutoff times for online transactions. For Liquid and Overnight Funds:
- Redemption requests received by 3:00 PM will get the closing NAV of the day immediately preceding the next business day.
- Requests received after 3:00 PM get the NAV of the next business day.
- However, for online mode redemptions in overnight funds, the cut-off timing has been extended to 7:00 PM IST, allowing investors to redeem a bit later.
How can investors achieve same-day NAV?
To maximize the possibility of receiving same-day NAV, here are some practical tips:
Use net banking or UPI
Use real-time payment methods such as UPI or net banking for instant fund transfer. Do not make cheque or NEFT/RTGS transfers near closing time.
Place orders early
Don't leave it all to the last minute. Order at least 1-2 hours prior to the cutoff time to allow enough time for payment realization.
Check bank accounts
To ensure the timely settlement of funds, please complete your payment through a supported net banking platform.
To wrap up
Understanding cut-off timings is important for investors to get the same-day NAV. A small delay can shift the investment to the next day’s NAV.
By following the right steps, investors can take advantage of market swings, boost returns, and maintain better control over their investments.
